  Margomkali

Margomkali is a folk art of the Syrian Christians of Kottayam and Thrissur districts in central Kerala. A group of dancers sing and dance around a lighted wick lamp Nilavilakku. Though performed by men in olden days, now a days it is performed by female dancers in a simple white dhoti, chatta (a white blouse with long sleeves) and neryathu - the three piece traditional Syrian Christian attire.

Margomkali is an allegorical enactment with the lamp representing Christ and the dancers his disciples. The performance is rendered in two parts and begins with songs and dance narrating the life of St.Thomas. The narration is stark as no musical instrument except a small cymbal is used, with the songs dating back to a period much before the Portuguese invasion.
