Venue:
Champakkulam, Alappuzha district
The spectacular boat race season of Kerala gets-a-go with the Champakkulam Vallam Kali or boat race, which is held in the Champakkulam river of Alappuzha district. It is one of the most popular boat races in the state, with a variety of boats participating in the event with traditional fervour. The highlights of this magnificent event include a ceremonial procession on the water, spectacular water floats, decorated boats and, of course, the regal chundanvalloms (snakeboats, so called because the prow resembles the raised hood of a snake), and, believe it or not, each is 100 feet long!
