| Aranmula Boat Race |

Venue: River Pamba, Aranmula in Pathanamthitta district.
It's not just the speed of the participating boats that makes Aranmula Vallamkali fascinating. More than a sport it is a ritual that takes place on the Uthrittathi asterism during the Onam festival and there is an interesting story associated with the boat race that makes it all the more beautiful.
Legend has it that a devout Brahmin vowed to offer all the requirements for the Thiruvona sadya (the grand Onam feast) at the Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple. Once the boat carrying these offerings, known as theThiruvona Thoni, was attacked by enemies. In order to protect the Thiruvona Thoni people from neighbouring areas sent their snake boats. Later on this practice evolved into an offering toLord Parthasarathyin the form of a snake boat race, held on the Uthrittathiday and eventually became the Aranmula Boat Race.
