Want to lose yourself amid multitudes of colour, music and dance? Then come to Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple in Harippad, Alappuzha and be part of the Thaipooyam festival, celebrated in the name of Lord Subrahmanya, the eldest son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi.
Thaipooyam festival is a one-day festival held at the Sree Subrahmanya Swamy Temple in Harippad. On the festival day, devotees carrying kavadi (richly decorated wooden arches) on their shoulders perform a ritualistic dance called Kavadiyattom and proceed to the temple. As an offering to the god some dancers also pierce their cheeks with long arrows and dance in a trance.
