Venue: All over Kerala
The Malayalam month of Karkidakam (July-August) plays countless roles in the lives of all Keralites. The wandering black clouds of the month carry a ton load of water droplets that unleash its multitudes of moods on the land and its people. Vavubali, a Hindu ritual to appease ancestors, takes place in the month of Karkidakam. People at homes and on the premises of temples, perform special rituals in memory of the departed souls.
The ritual is often held as a mass event in certain parts of Kerala, of which the most notable ones are held on the banks of the River Periyar, near the Shiva temple in Aluva and the Papanasam beach in Varkala in Thiruvananthapuram District. People believe that the departed souls attain moksha (liberation) if this ritualistic homage is performed on Karkidaka Vavu.
