The annual chariot festival, locally known as ratholsavam, held at the Sree Viswanatha Swamy temple, dedicated to Lord Viswanatha or Shiva, is a unique one among the festivals of Kerala. This temple is believed to be 700 years old. Kalpathi is a traditional Tamil Brahmin settlement in Kerala, which is also known as dakshin kasi or the Kasi of South India.
The festival days here will have Vedic recitals and cultural programmes. On the last three days, of the festival, thousands of devotees gather together to draw decorated temple chariots through the streets of Kalpathi village. It will be just one chariot that will be pulled on the first day, followed by two on the second and three on the last day of the festival.
Getting there:
Nearest railway station: Palakkad, about 3 km away.
Nearest airport: Coimbatore in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu, about 55 km away from Palakkad.
