Thaipooya Mahotsavam, Harippad

Venue: Sree Subramanya Swamy Temple, Harippad, Alappuzha district.

The Thaipooya Mahotsavam, a one-day festival dedicated to Lord Subramanya, the eldest son of Lord Siva and Goddess Parvathi, is celebrated in most temples in Kerala. On the festival day, dancing devotees carry kavadis - richly decorated wooden arches of different shapes and sizes - on their shoulders in a ceremonious procession to the temples. This ritual dance is called Kavadiyattom.

Getting there:

The temple is located just a kilometre away from Harippad town in Alappuzha district.
Nearest railway station: Harippad, about 5 km away.
Nearest airport: Cochin International Airport, about 85 km away from Alappuzha.
