Elankavu Attuvela
Elankavu Attuvela
Details of access to the place
An ethereal beauty surrounds the story and scenes of the Attuvela festival which happens in a tiny village called Vadayar near Vaikom. The village has an ancient temple where the presiding deity, the goddess of Elankavu, is believed to be the preserver of the village by the local people. According to legend, the goddess is the sister of the goddess of Kodungalloor temple, another place of worship situated miles away. Every year, the villagers celebrate the Attuvela festival to welcome the goddess of Kodungalloor who arrives to visit her sister. The most beautiful scenes of the festival unfold on the nearby Vadayar river where a huge replica of the temple is made over beautifully illuminated canoes to welcome the arriving guest. As dusk falls, the canoes start their journey from Aaattuvela Kadavu, some two km away from the temple. It’s simply an exciting sight to watch the canoes gliding down the river accompanied by hordes of decorated boats. The upbeat rhythm of the traditional percussion orchestra adds to the ethereal charm of the celestial get-together.
