Description of festival (Legends, History, Customs related with the festival, Highlights):

The annual festival at Vaniyillam Someswary temple at Karivelloor in Kannur district is an ideal event to witness Theyyam, a colourful ritual dance form of Kerala. The Theyyam dance is performed to appease gods or heroic ancestors. Theyyam performances would be awe inspiring visual experiences for first time viewers. In the midst of devotees who have gathered on the temple premises, the theyyams, dressed up in bright hues of red begin to dance. As the dance slowly transforms into a trance and as the upbeat drum rhythms and the sounds of prayer fills the air, it would be an experience of the divine for the viewers. The festival at Someswary temple falls sometime during March or April. The Theyyams performed here include Raktha Chamundi, Angakkulangara Bhagavathy, Kattumoorthy, Veeran Daivam and Karichamundi.
