The ultimate or nothing ? that?s
what this 86-yr old bundle of extraordinary energy, talent and guts
wants. No wonder the incomparable M F Hussain has scaled such heights
in his art and life. The world-famous painter, presently in Kerala to
paint pictures of God?s own country as part of a project for the
State Tourism Department, says this land is, in many ways, the
ultimate for him.
You have paid many visits to
Kerala. What are the changes you have seen over the
years?
My first visit to Kerala was in ?68 and my
last, two years back. In the last ten years especially, there have
been many positive changes and Kerala has developed
tremendously.
What are things you like most about
Kerala?
Its lush natural beauty, art forms, films?
there?s no other place like Kerala anywhere in the world. The only
other place in the country that can boast of such cultural excellence
is Bengal. Your Kathakali, for instance, which I have used in my film
Gajagamini, is the highest form of dance-drama that you can find
anywhere in the world ? the ultimate! That is why it wins so much
applause and appreciation even outside India.
What
about the people?
They fascinate me. They are not
aggressive like the people in the North. This is only place where I
feel wanted. I have painted a lot of Rajasthan because it is so
colourful. But here, people use very little colour and the starkness
is fascinating.
Do you like the Kerala
cuisine?
I love it. My favourite dishes are Appam
and Kozhikotta.
Do you think Kerala can become a major
player in the world travel market?
If the State
government, and especially the team at the Tourism Department,
continues to promote Kerala with the same skill and at the same pace
that it is doing now, Kerala will definitely become a great tourist
attraction.
