Chungam, about 12 km from Kottayam town, is home to the oldest college and school in Kerala. It was Rev. Benjamin Bailey of the Church Missionary Society (CMS) of London who constructed the CMS College and the CMS College Higher Secondary School. Colonel Munroe, the then Resident of the East India Company and the regent queen Rani Gauri Lakshmi Bhai supported him in the endeavour.
