The Kavanattinkara Boat Race is conducted during Onam season, on the day of Avittam in the Malayalam month of Chingam. The race commences with a procession from the Virippukala Sree Shaktheeshwaram Temple to River Kavanar, the venue.
Various art and dance forms like the tableau, Kolkali, Thiruvathirakali and Garudan thullal are performed in connection with the boat race.
