Ananathapura Lake temple

The Ananthapura Lake Temple is located in the middle of a lake. To reach the sanctum sanctorum, one has to take the bridge near the Kumbla-Badiyadka road, about 14 km from Kasaragod town. It is the only such temple in the whole of Kerala.

The temple, dedicated to Sri Padmanabha who reclines on the serpent king, Ananta, is believed to have been built in the 9th century. Since then, the temple has been renovated many times. Apart from the beautiful location, the temple is also known for its mural paintings based on the stories of the Vedas. These adorn the outer walls of the temple.

On the north-eastern corner of the lake is a large cave with a small pit that holds water. The pit is always seen as being full of water. Another interesting aspect of the lake is that many devottees have reported the presence of a crocodile in it - but the reports have always been of only one crocodile.
