Mananchira Square, located at the heart of Kozhikode city, is constructed around the Mananchira tank. The huge tank (chira) was built by the last Zamorin King, Mana Vikrama, and is fed by a natural spring. The Square is managed by the corporation of Kozhikode.
The area around the tank has been partly converted into a park, and landscaped with trees, plants and lawns. There is also a musical fountain at the Square that attracts a lot of visitors. The arch at the entrance guarded by Tipu Sultan’s cannons, the ethnic buildings around the Square all help maintain its old-world charm. The fairly recent addition of a public library constructed in the traditional style, inside the maidan premises, merges well with the ambience of the place.
A bust of renowned Malayalam writer and Jnanpith award-winner, S. K. Pottekkad, is placed inside a traffic island close to the maidan. This is the starting point of the S. M. street.
