Markets

The project aims to revitalize the markets for the benefit of the residents, owners and labourers. Development within the market will be done without distributing the existing character and atmosphere of the market, especially the feelings of the traders and labourers who make a livelihood here. A walk through the market is expected to add an old world charm to the shopping experience. Three markets are projected to be developed as traditional shopping streets. They are viz. Kottapuram market

The Kottappuram market was a thriving commercial street whose fabric has had a variety of Portuguese, Dutch and traditional Kerala influences.

Objectives

• Economic regeneration of the market
• Retaining existing market activities and systems
• Retaining the livelihood of the people who benefit from the market
• Conservation of the historic buildings within the market

The project does not stress on the installation of facilities for tourists and visitors, but on the development and improvement of facilities for the local community, which will also benefit form tourism activities.

The common areas within the market are also being designed to cope with the new proposed face of the market.

Facilities to come up include those for drinking water, restaurants and cafes, ATMs and banking facilities, internet cafes, public toilets, telephone kiosks, tourist information centres, lodging facilities, street lighting, storm water drainage and solid waste management.

Environmental improvement of the market

• Pedestrian priority streets - with paving
• Spill out spaces with elements like a clock tower has been designed in the open market area
• Improvement of the existing townscape

Waterfront Development

• The upcoming boat jetties will also encourage the trade of goods through the water way. Tourist information centres and associated facilities are also being planned.
• The waterfront will be developed so as to facilitate seating along the waterfront with a view of the river.
• A walkway to line entire length of the waterfront.
• Open air theatre.

• The market square will be completely pedestrianised. The entire area paved and sheds provided within the square for vendors.
• A central clock tower to be built with steps around it, which can be used by visitors and vendors.
