These women are making the Athappookkalam (flower-carpet) to welcome Mahabali, the mythological ruler of Kerala, on his yearly visit to his land during Onam. Mahabali was the most popular king of the land and Onam, the harvest festival, is celebrated in his memory. Such floral carpets adorn the courtyards of most houses during the time of the festival.
