Kottakkunnu
Kottakkunnu, located in the heart of Malappuram city, is one of the district's most popular picnic spots, offering a blend of historical significance and recreational activities. The name "Kottakkunnu," meaning "the mount with the fort," reflects its historical roots, as it was once the site of a fort built by the Zamorins of Kozhikode. Though the fort is no longer standing, traces of it and other historical monuments can still be found on the hills. Kottakkunnu is also historically significant as the place where freedom fighter Variyam Kunnath Kunjahammed Haji was executed by the British for his role in anti-colonial struggles.
Often compared to the scenic Marine Drive in Mumbai, Kottakkunnu is known for its mesmerizing gardens and a wide range of attractions that appeal to both children and adults. Among the highlights are the Children's Park, Adventure Park, Cycle Track, Arangu Open Air Auditorium, 9D Theater, Balloon Park, and Bumper Park, offering over 30 rides for kids. Special weekend and festival attractions include a musical fountain and a laser show, which draw large crowds.
Due to its central location, Kottakkunnu is easily accessible, with the KSRTC bus station just a kilometer away. The area is especially lively in the evenings, as families and friends gather to unwind after a busy day. In addition to its recreational offerings, Kottakkunnu is also home to the ancient murals at the nearby Vettakkorumakan and Siva temples, adding to the cultural richness of the area.
Steeped in history and surrounded by a peaceful and friendly atmosphere, Kottakkunnu is a must-visit destination in Malappuram. The combination of historical remnants, scenic beauty, and a variety of modern attractions makes it a unique spot for both relaxation and exploration.
