Pathiramanal Island, located in the Alappuzha district of Kerala, is a haven for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts. Spanning 10 acres in the serene Vembanad Lake, this green island is a sanctuary for hundreds of rare migratory birds from around the world, as well as a diverse range of flora and fauna. The name "Pathiramanal" translates to "Sands of Night," adding to the mystical allure of this beautiful spot.

Accessible only by boat, Pathiramanal lies between the backwaters of Thaneermukkom and Kumarakom and falls under the Cherthala taluk. The island is also known by other names, such as Ananda Padmanabhan Thoppu and Pathira Thoppu. The journey to Pathiramanal from Alappuzha takes about 1.5 hours by motorboat or 30 minutes by speedboat, making it an ideal pit stop during a houseboat cruise.

The island is home to around 90 species of birds, 30 species of butterflies, 160 species of plants, 55 species of fish, and 20 species of spiders. Due to minimal human interference, Pathiramanal has become a roosting place for many water birds, especially those belonging to the cormorant family. Bird species commonly spotted here include the Darter, Indian Shag, Purple Heron, Night Heron, Black Bittern, Chestnut Bittern, Little Egret, Cattle Egret, Grey Heron, and more. Other inhabitants include Common Teals, Pheasant-tailed Jacanas, Bronze-winged Jacanas, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Whistling Duck, Cotton Pygmy Goose, and Smooth Indian Otters.

Pathiramanal is also known for its rich plant life, including rare species such as Aponogeton appendiculatus, which is listed as a threatened species in the Red Data Book of Indian Plants. The island's waters host mussel colonies of the Villorita species, and the island also harbors medicinal plants like Calophyllum inophyllum, Tylophora indica, and Senna alata. Mangrove species like Bruguiera gymnorhiza and Sonneratia apetala are also present, contributing to the island's unique biodiversity.

In recent years, the Government of Kerala has initiated the Pathiramanal Biodiversity Conservation and Responsible Eco-tourism Development Project to enhance the island's appeal as an eco-tourism destination. This project focuses on conserving the island's biodiversity, including its mangroves and other plant species, while promoting responsible tourism.

Visitors to Pathiramanal can enjoy the tranquil ambiance of the island, surrounded by shimmering greenery and serene waters. Evenings spent on the island offer a peaceful experience, with views of Chinese fishing nets, sand-laden wooden boats, and fishermen in canoes adding to the picturesque setting.
