Bhoothathankettu is a scenic damsite, with boating facilities, situated in a vast virgin forest. According to mythology, the natural fortification of forests and hills was built by bhoothams (spirits or ghosts) overnight. Hence the name Bhoothathankettu - Fort of the Spirits - the topography of which proved very convenient for building a dam. The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is also close by at Thattekkad. The place is also ideal for trekking through the forest.
