The trail experience

Kadamakudy is a world of islands, narrow waterways, paddy fields, mangroves and fishing communities. This trail takes you across its backwaters, into its fishing traditions and Pokkali fields, through mangrove canals by kayak and finally into the cultural world of Kothad. The journey brings together water, food, farming and heritage in one long day on the islands.

Itinerary

How the day unfolds

  1. Stopover 1

    Grand Backwater Boat Journey

    Set out from Kadamakudy jetty and explore the island landscape by boat, passing Chinese fishing nets, mangroves, paddy fields, prawn farms and village life along the way.

  2. Stopover 2

    Traditional Fishing Experience

    Meet local fishermen and discover traditional techniques including veesu vala (cast net), neetu vala (drag net) and chuda edal (rod and bait fishing).

  3. Stopover 3

    Pokkali Feast

    Enjoy a traditional meal served on a banana leaf, with Pokkali rice and the fresh catch of the island waters.

  4. Stopover 4

    Kayaking Through the Mangroves

    Paddle through the narrow backwater canals, looking out for birds, crabs, waterways and the homes tucked into the island landscape.

  5. Stopover 5

    Pokkali Farm & Island Walk

    Walk along the field bunds and discover Pokkali, Kerala's traditional saline-tolerant rice farming system, alongside local village life and palm-leaf weaving.

  6. Stopover 6

    Kalaripayattu at Kothad

    End the trail with a demonstration of Kerala's traditional martial art at a Kalari on Kothad Island, bringing together movement, discipline and living cultural heritage.

  7. Return Journey — 5:00 PM

    Return to the jetty carrying the memory of a day spent among the waters, fields, fishing traditions and island communities of Kadamakudy.

Terms & disclaimer

Requests are accepted only 5 to 60 days before the arrival date. A maximum of 2 bookings is allowed per package per day. Online submission is a request, not a confirmed reservation. KRTMS will contact the traveller to verify details, availability and payment. Carry a valid photo ID. Follow guide instructions and local safety advisories. KRTMS may reschedule outdoor activities in the event of weather or community ceremonies. Alcohol is not served on community premises. Photography of people requires consent.

Requests must be submitted at least 5 days prior to arrival and can be booked up to 60 days (2 months) in advance. Choose a date between 12 Oct 2026 and 06 Dec 2026.
