Overview

The trail experience

Kozhikode is a city where history is not confined to monuments. It lives in the hands of potters, the bustle of old markets, the aroma of halwa and biriyani, the work of goldsmiths and the stories carried through generations of faith, trade and community. This trail moves from the clay fields of Elathur into the heart of S.M. Street and its living heritage, before ending at Tali Shiva Temple, where the city's Zamorin history and scholarly traditions come together.

Make something. Walk its streets. Taste its stories. Follow its history.

Itinerary

How the day unfolds

  1. Stopover 1

    PB Bidula’s Clay Studio, Elathur

Begin among the paddy fields of Elathur and discover the traditional craft of pottery — from preparing natural clay and working the wheel to hand finishing, decoration and kiln firing. Try your hand at the craft and meet the artisans who keep it alive.

  2. Stopover 2

    S.M. Street Heritage Walk

Step into S.M. Street, the historic commercial heart of Kozhikode, where markets, food, craft and the city's long trading heritage continue to meet. Along the walk, discover Shankaran Bakery, Arya Bhavan, Kim & Co., Top Form Restaurant, Kammath Lane, Parsi Anjuman Baug and Hanuman Kovil — seven different windows into the city's culinary, commercial and multicultural life.

    The walk brings together:

Shankaran Bakery — Taste Kozhikodan halwa, one of the city's signature culinary traditions.
Arya Bhavan — Experience the legacy of traditional Kerala vegetarian cuisine.
Kim & Co. — Discover Kozhikode's fountain-pen legacy at this historic shop.
Top Form Restaurant — Optional lunch with Kozhikodan biriyani and classic Malabar cuisine.
Kammath Lane — Walk through one of Kozhikode's traditional jewellery quarters and glimpse the craft of goldsmithing.
Parsi Anjuman Baug — Discover the enduring Parsi presence in Kozhikode and its contribution to the city's multicultural history.
Hanuman Kovil — Experience another layer of Kozhikode's spiritual and cultural diversity.

  3. Stopover 3

    Local Food & Street Culture

Let food become part of the walk itself — from Kozhikodan halwa and traditional vegetarian cuisine to Malabar biriyani, local food culture and the atmosphere of the old market streets.

  4. Stopover 4

    Tali Shiva Temple

End the journey at Tali Shiva Temple, one of Kozhikode's important historic temples and a place closely associated with the Zamorins. Here, the story opens out into the city's spice-trade history and Revathi Pattathanam, the historic gathering of Sanskrit scholars associated with the Zamorin court.

Discover the Zamorin kingdom. Follow the story of the City of Spices. Hear about Revathi Pattathanam and Kozhikode's scholarly traditions.
