Responsible Tourism (RT) is an approach that involves growth and respect for the planet, the people and the visitors who grace our shores. It is a solemn promise to ensure that the holistic experience of Kerala is what our guests receive, while not compromising on our core ethics and values. There are three broad responsibilities that RT concerns itself with: economic, social and environmental. The initiative was first implemented at four destinations- Kovalam, Kumarakom, Thekkady and Wayanad. Kumarakom was honoured by the Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India for the best Responsible Tourism Initiative in Kerala and it also bagged the National Award for Rural Tourism. Now more locations have joined in, including Kumbalangi in Ernakulam, Vythiri and Ambalavayal in Wayanad and Bekal in Kasaragod.

On the social level, it was leaders from the communities that led the charge. This included Safety Management, Visitors Management, Local Resource Management, Souvenir, Local Art and Culture, Ethnic Food, Health Management, Local Infrastructure, Capacity Building, Information of the Destination, Character of Destination etc. Each community was asked to provide feedback on what would be the best way for a tourist to experience village life along with their own opinion on the entire industry. On the Environmental front, studies and surveys were held that dealt with basic Energy, Water and Waste issues. There were also detailed Energy Audit Analysis among the partnering hotels at 4 destinations. Conservation has become an integral focus among all the communities involved.

Kerala has now developed a RT system that can be replicated by other sites across the world. Kerala State Tourism Department takes forward the concept of responsibility in tourism into practice. We want to join hands with our global partners and ensure the dreams and ideals of RT get stronger with each passing year.
