Kerala Tourism has won the award for world’s Best in Responsible Tourism category at the World Travel Market (WTM) 2018 held at London. Kerala Tourism is receiving this prestigious award for the second consecutive year for its responsible tourism initiatives. Mr. Kadakampally Surendran, Minister for Tourism, Kerala and Ms. Rani George IAS, Secretary, Kerala Tourism received the award at WTM.
Activities conducted over the past one year are what earned RT the WTM award.
Mr. Kadampally Surendran, Minister for Tourism, Kerala said, “RT Kerala received this award for its initiatives that support the local communities and RT needs to be appreciated for this”.
“This award shows that the initiatives of RT Mission are being successfully implemented in different parts of the State and therefore are gaining international accolades”, said Ms. Rani George IAS, Secretary, Kerala Tourism.
“This award will help to implement the Responsible Tourism Mission initiatives in Kerala better”, said, Mr. Bala Kiran IAS, Director, Kerala Tourism.
Mr. Rupesh Kumar, Coordinator, Responsible Tourism Mission, Kerala said that this award will strengthen the development of people supporting tourism in Kerala.
Currently, 10938 units have been registered and function as part of the Responsible Tourism Mission. Last year an amount of Rs. 52.6 million has been gained by these local units through RT initiatives. RT Mission gave training for around 2800 local people. 450 families are earning a better livelihood through 20 RT Village Tourism packages. Around 50,000 families are directly or indirectly benefiting through the activities of the Responsible Tourism Mission.
Last year, Kerala received the Highly Recommended Award for its Responsible Tourism initiatives in Kumarakom, Kottayam.
