Malampuzha

Malampuzha dam, located about 10 km from Palakkad, is one of the major attractions in Palakkad. It is the largest reservoir in Kerala and was built in 1955 across Malampuzha, a tributary of River Nila.

Malampuzha garden with its manicured lawns, well laid out flower beds, pools, fountains and pathways is situated adjacent to the dam.

The garden is famous for its aerial ropeway. A ride through the aerial ropeway offers a panoramic view of the dam and the garden. The rock-cut garden here designed by Nek Chand is distinct with the fact that it is made of waste materials such as used plastic bottles, cans, discarded tiles, granites, stones, fuse carriers, etc.

A major highlight here is the concrete sculpture of Yakshi created by the legendary sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman.

Rock Garden of Malampuzha: A Garden of Wonders

Conceived and designed by noted sculptor Nek Chand Saini, this garden gives a second lease of life to discarded scrap materials such as cans, plastic bottles, broken tiles, bangle pieces, stones, tins and so forth. Art lovers are bound to be fascinated to see every scrap given a creative spin, and transformed into an exotic piece of art. The rock garden is being maintained by the District Tourism Promotion Council, Palakkad. It is the second such garden in India to be created by the same artist who made one in Chandigarh.
