Mattool Beach is one of the most distinctive beach destinations along the Kannur coastline. It features prominently in the district’s beach circuit alongside Payyambalam Beach and Muzhappilangad Beach. Located around 20 kilometres from Kannur town, Mattool is easily accessible via frequent bus services along the Kannur–Pazhayangadi route. Travellers opting for a shorter and more scenic drive can take the Irinav–Madakkara route, which includes a pleasant diversion through Pazhayangadi and Madakkara, an area noted for its small irrigation dam. Water access is also emerging through the developing Azhikkal Ferry route.

According to local legend, the name “Mattool” is believed to have originated from the writings of the medieval traveller Ibn Battuta, who referred to the island as “Maaathool” in his travel accounts. Geographically, Mattool holds significance as the meeting point of the Valapattanam River and the Kuppam River before they merge into the Arabian Sea. While this river confluence once defined the village’s identity, Mattool is now widely recognised for a unique attraction that sets it apart from other beaches in Kerala.

The Pet Station near Mattool Central Beach has become the area’s most remarkable draw. Maintained by its owner, Sabir, this expansive facility houses a rare and diverse collection of pets, birds, and fish sourced from different parts of the world. Unlike conventional aquariums or small animal parks, the Pet Station functions as an extensive private menagerie and is considered unmatched anywhere else in Kerala. Visitors can explore the collection by purchasing an entry ticket, and for many, a visit to Mattool is considered incomplete without experiencing this distinctive attraction.

The beach itself is divided into North, Central, and South sections. Central Beach is the most suitable for visitors, offering clean sands, calmer surroundings, and safer conditions for walking and relaxation. The northern and southern stretches lack protective seawalls and are generally not recommended for casual visitors. Although bus services terminate at the southern end, Central Beach can be reached easily via a short auto-rickshaw ride. Small food stalls operating in the area add to the visitor experience by offering local refreshments.

Mattool also provides opportunities for boating and river-based recreation. 

The Water Transport Department operates a passenger boat service connecting Mattool to Parassinikkadavu, a major pilgrimage centre, via the Valapattanam River. In addition, private operators offer leisure boating within the river and estuary. Visitors with additional time may explore nearby attractions such as Azhikkal Port and Chala Beach. Another important site in the vicinity is the Cherukunnu Annapoorneshwari Temple, a revered pilgrimage centre known for its distinctive architecture and references in classical texts such as Perinchelloor Mahatmyam. The nearby Kannapuram railway station, where long-distance express trains halt, makes it convenient to combine visits to Mattool and Cherukunnu.
