One of the important days for Christians in Kerala is the death anniversary of Saint Alphonsa, the first woman saint of India. The festival which falls on 28th July (during the Monsoon season in Kerala) is attended by a large number of devotees from all walks of life that pray and seek the blessings of Saint Alphonsa. The St. Mary's Syro-Malabar Catholic Church also known as Anakkallu church in Bharananganam holds the mortal remains of St. Alphonsa. Bharananganam is located on the banks of the Meenachil River in Kerala in a place with natural beauty and verdant vegetation.
