The head of the Karippidi Puthiya Purayil family once went on a long trek to witness a temple festival. On his way back he visited another northern temple to pray but discovered that the festival there had already ended. The Karanavar got as prasadam only the remnants of the offerings to the deity. The deity felt an affection for the uncomplaining Karanavar and came along with him. Story has it that she was then established at a devasthanam in addition to the existing deity that had been granted as a gift by the Illam to the locals.
