This is the story of a captain Kannammaan who died in battle and was reborn as a Theyyam. There are ballads which extol Kannammaan virtues and strength in battle. These ballads are sung at the Devasthanam. The Tharavattu heads who went with him from Purakkunnu Thavidisseri still maintain the temple. The Theyyams at this devasthanam use the theyyam idols of the Devasthanam to express hero worship (veeraradhana).
