This Theyyakkavu has a Pottan or dumb man as its deity. The Pottan in this case, however, is none other than Lord Shiva who appears in this less than stellar form to test Sankara. The festival is celebrated every year and Theyyams can be performed as offerings by devotees any time of the year. Pottan Deivam can be seen as the first popular move against the distinction of caste and religion in Kerala. Once dressed up, Pottan is considered equal to any other deity. This popular Theyyam takes on a supernatural halo when it transforms into Lord Shiva.
