Background

Department of Tourism, Government of India had decided to discontinue the scheme for Approval of Restaurants with effect from 1st July 2003. Government of India's approvals was valid only for a period of 3 years from the effective date of approval of each hotel. Since the approved hotels are enjoying certain incentives/benefits from State Government as part of promotion of tourism industry in the State such as bar license, investment subsidy, electricity tariff concession etc., it is necessary for them to have a continued valid approval. In this context vide Government of India letter NO. 8-HRACC (2)/2003 dated 21st April 2003 Government of India requested State Governments to introduce guidelines to regulate the working of Restaurants in the state in order to ensure that tourists and customers are provided high quality and hygienic services of International Standard. Also it is necessary to ensure presence of restaurants in the State providing high quality and hygienic services of International Standard.

The new scheme of Classification of Restaurants by Department of Tourism, Government of Kerala has been formulated in the above context.
