Anjuruli is located within the highland terrain of Idukki district, surrounded by forest slopes, reservoir edges and undulating hill formations. The landscape is defined by a 5.5-kilometre-long tunnel carved through a single stretch of rock. This circular tunnel channels water from the Erattayar dam near Kattappana toward the Idukki reservoir, forming one of the most visually distinctive engineered structures in the region.

The entrance of the tunnel appears as a wide, perfectly rounded opening cut into the rock face. Water flows steadily through it, emerging into a pool that spills forward in a short, forceful cascade. The rock surface around the mouth of the tunnel remains textured and dark, shaped by continuous water movement. During monsoon months, the discharge intensifies, and the waterfall becomes more dramatic, requiring caution near the edges.

From elevated viewpoints nearby, the reservoir spreads outward in curved inlets bordered by forested hills. The shoreline bends inward at several points, creating narrow peninsulas and quiet water pockets. The name “Anjuruli” is locally interpreted as “five vessels,” referring to five hill formations that resemble inverted cooking pots. These contours become more visible when reservoir levels recede.

The area draws visitors interested in trekking, cycling and light adventure exploration. Forest trails extend beyond the main viewing area, and trekking deeper into the catchment region requires prior permission from the forest department. The terrain combines rocky surfaces, packed earth paths and shaded tree cover, giving the entire location a raw and slightly rugged character.

Anjuruli is best experienced as a landscape of scale and structure—rock tunnel, falling water and expansive reservoir framed by forested slopes. It stands apart not only for its natural setting but for the way engineered water movement integrates into the surrounding terrain of Idukki.
