Among the many structures that quietly narrate Palakkad’s colonial past, the British Bridge at Karingarapully stands apart for its purpose and setting. Located in Kodumbu Panchayat, a short drive from Palakkad town, the bridge spans the Shokanashini River, also known as the Kannadipuzha, a tributary of the Bharathapuzha. Built in 1941, the structure was originally called the Kannadi Aqueduct by the British, and its engineering legacy has since earned it the local name “British Bridge.”

Unlike conventional road bridges, this structure functions as an aqueduct designed to carry water across the river rather than traffic alone. It features thirteen evenly spaced spans, each separated by roughly thirty feet. Running through its centre is a canal approximately seven metres deep. When filled, the canal transforms into a flowing stream, elevated above the river it crosses. On one side of the canal runs a roadway wide enough for light motor vehicles, while the other side accommodates a pedestrian pathway, allowing people to move alongside the flowing water.

Locally, the bridge is also known as Canal Palam, a name more commonly used for navigation and directions. Approaching the bridge from Palakkad town, the surroundings gradually shift into open countryside. The road narrows, fields widen, and the urban rhythm fades into the calm of rural Palakkad. Despite its proximity to the town, the setting retains a quiet, almost pastoral quality shaped by flowing water, vegetation, and open skies.

Historically, the aqueduct is believed to have been constructed during the British administration for irrigation purposes. Today, it continues to serve that function by carrying water from the Malampuzha Dam to different parts of the district, sustaining agriculture across the region. Over time, the bridge and its green surroundings have drawn attention for their visual appeal and serene atmosphere. The structure has featured in Malayalam films such as Odiyan and Jamna Pyari, further cementing its place in Palakkad’s contemporary cultural landscape.

A visit to the British Bridge often fits naturally into a broader exploration of Palakkad town. On the return journey, travellers commonly stop at Palakkad Fort, one of the best-preserved forts in Kerala. Maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India, the fort is believed to have taken its present form in the eighteenth century under Hyder Ali of Mysore. Later used by Tipu Sultan as a military base, the fort’s laterite walls, bastions, moat and watchtowers speak of Palakkad’s strategic importance as a gateway to Kerala.

Nearby, Kalpathy Agraharam offers a contrasting cultural experience. Recognised as Kerala’s first heritage village, the agraharams reflect the settlement of Tamil Brahmin communities from Thanjavur. A walk through Kalpathy Street reveals tightly arranged homes, temple architecture, and everyday practices shaped by centuries-old traditions. The Visalakshi Sametha Viswanatha Swamy Temple anchors the area, while the annual Kalpathy Ratholsavam brings the streets alive with ritual and celebration.

The British Bridge, Palakkad Fort and Kalpathy Agraharam form a circuit that captures the district’s layered identity. From colonial infrastructure and military history to living cultural traditions, the landscape around Karingarapully offers a quiet yet compelling window into Palakkad’s past and present.
