Thannyam–Nattika Canal Crossing near Thriprayar

Chemmapilly Hanging Bridge is a pedestrian suspension bridge built across a canal that connects the coastal villages of Thannyam and Nattika near Anthikkad in Thrissur district. Located about 25 kilometres from Thrissur town, the bridge functions as both a local crossing and a leisure spot along the backwater canal system of central Kerala.

The bridge lies in Chemmapilly, a locality that forms part of the cultural landscape around Thriprayar. The access road toward Chemmapilly links the eastern entrance of Thriprayar Sree Rama Temple with Peringottukara, placing the bridge within a region associated with the Nalambalam temple circuit and local pilgrimage routes. The surrounding area is characterised by low-lying canal waters, coconut-lined banks and village roads that remain relatively less congested compared to urban centres.

A defining feature of the Chemmapilly Hanging Bridge is its restricted access policy. Only pedestrians and bicycles are permitted on the suspension span. Motor vehicles are not allowed. This limitation preserves the quiet character of the bridge and allows visitors to walk across at an unhurried pace. Evenings are particularly preferred, when the canal reflects the fading light and the open stretch across the water creates a steady flow of breeze. The setting is frequently chosen for casual walks, photography and small group visits.

Boating facilities are available in the canal below, including pedal boats for short recreational rides. Access to the bridge is free of charge. Local toddy shops on either bank of the canal serve fresh palm toddy along with traditional toddy-shop cuisine, making the location part of the broader rural food landscape of Thrissur district.

Chemmapilly Hanging Bridge is accessible by private vehicles and public transport. Frequent buses operate on the Thrissur–Thriprayar route. Thriprayar serves as the nearest major bus stop, from where auto-rickshaws are available to reach Chemmapilly at a minimal fare. Visitors are advised to exercise caution during the monsoon season, as rain can make the bridge surface slippery and increase the risk of accidents.
