India’s first mosque, built in 629 AD, blending temple-like architecture with historic significance, located near Kodungalloor.

The Cheraman Juma Masjid was built in the year AD 629 by Malik Ibn Dinar. Considered to be the first mosque in India and the second in the world where Juma prayers were started, this mosque is believed to have been built during the lifetime of Prophet Muhammed.

Now a part of the prestigious Muziris Heritage Project, the mosque has undergone numerous restorations and renovations over several centuries. The architecture of the mosque is noted for its different design and structure as the front of the structure resembles a traditional Hindu temple.

It is believed that once when the last Cheraman Perumal, the Chera king, went to Arabia, he met the Prophet and embraced Islam. He then sent Malik Ibn Dinar to Kerala with letters to be delivered to his relatives. Through the letters, he requested his relatives to extend their whole hearted support to Malik Ibn Dinar. Though the masjid was built by Malik Ibn Dinar, over the years the original structure was modified several times thereby giving it a mix of the features of Middle Eastern and typical Kerala architectural styles.

It is believed that after the renovations the mosque underwent during the 11th and 18th centuries the original appearance was maintained till 1974 when further refurbishments were conducted. During this time a new building was put up in the place of its old facade. Even when such extensive work was done the inner parts of the mosque including its sanctum sanctorum, wooden steps and ceiling were left intact. These areas still hold on to the architectural grandeur of the past. An interesting feature of the Masjid that has drawn devotees for centuries is the ancient oil lamp present here. It is believed that this lamp has been burning continuously since the origin of the mosque.

Kerala's first Islamic Heritage Museum has also been set up in the Masjid complex as a part of the Muziris Heritage Complex. The museum showcases the history of Islam in the state through visual media and information panels. The story of Cheraman Perumal is also elaborately illustrated through murals and paintings. The audio-visual presentations take visitors through the history of Muslim rulers and the role played by Kodungalloor in India's fight for freedom.

Located at a distance of barely 2km from Kodungalloor Town, the Cheraman Juma Masjid is an iconic representation of the Islamic traditions of the nation.
