Punalur Suspension Bridge
The Punalur Suspension Bridge, a remarkable 19th-century engineering marvel, stands gracefully over the Kallada River in the bustling town of Punalur, Kollam. This unique 400-foot-long bridge, designed by British engineer Albert Henry and constructed during the reign of Travancore Maharaja Ayilyam Thirunal Rama Varma, was completed in 1877 after six years of meticulous work, beginning in 1871.
Made from a blend of iron, wood, and masonry, the bridge's construction materials were largely imported from England, including the sturdy Kambam wood used for its deck. The bridge is suspended by iron chains, which are anchored into four massive wells, giving it an architectural style unlike any other in Kerala. Initially, it was built to prevent wild animals from crossing into the village and destroying crops, while also facilitating trade and ushering in significant developments in the area.
Today, the Punalur Suspension Bridge is open only to pedestrians, having been closed to vehicular traffic due to its historical significance and the need for preservation. It was declared a protected monument by the Archaeological Department of Kerala, and renovation works were completed in 2014, ensuring that this piece of history remains intact for future generations.
Visitors to the bridge can experience its gentle wobble as they walk across its wooden planks, offering a unique sensation and a direct connection to the bridge's rich past. The view from the bridge is particularly enchanting at night when it is illuminated by a golden yellow hue from the surrounding lamps, creating a serene and picturesque setting. Seating arrangements near the bridge allow visitors to relax and take in the tranquil atmosphere, punctuated only by the soft gurgling of the river below.
As the only hanging bridge in South India, the Punalur Suspension Bridge continues to captivate those who visit, offering a glimpse into the ingenuity of colonial-era engineering and the enduring legacy of Kerala's architectural heritage.
