Kerala’s Longest Hanging Bridge Amidst Forest and River

Tucked within the forested belt of Ernakulam district, the Inchathotty Suspension Bridge stretches gracefully across the Periyar River, linking the panchayats of Keerampara and Kuttampuzha. At approximately 185 metres in length, it is widely regarded as Kerala’s longest pedestrian hanging bridge, designed exclusively for walkers and light movement across the river corridor.

The bridge rises high above the flowing Periyar, suspended between dense green riverbanks. Though often described as towering nearly 200 metres above the water, the structure actually spans about 185 metres in length, with its elevation offering a clear, uninterrupted view of the river’s width and the surrounding forest canopy. As visitors step onto the narrow walkway, the structure responds with a gentle sway, an expected movement that adds a sense of adventure to the crossing.

From the centre of the bridge, the Periyar appears broad and calm, curving through a stretch of thick vegetation. The surrounding landscape forms part of the larger Thattekad forest region, not far from the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, one of Kerala’s noted bird habitats. The tree cover spreads outward in layered greens, and during early mornings or late afternoons, mist often hangs lightly above the river surface.

Below, everyday river life continues quietly. Traditional country boats drift along the water, fishermen cast nets near the banks, and occasional kayakers trace slow arcs across the current. The movement of boats seen from above adds depth to the perspective, making the bridge not just a crossing point but a viewing deck suspended within nature.

Inchathotty functions both as a connectivity structure and as a small-scale eco-tourism attraction. It draws nature enthusiasts, families, photographers and travellers exploring nearby destinations such as Bhoothathankettu and Neriamangalam. The combination of forested surroundings, flowing river and the gentle oscillation of the bridge creates an experience that blends scenic calm with a mild sense of thrill.
