Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary
A haven for over 60 different species of migratory birds, the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is a paradise for bird watchers.Â
Located around 25kms from Kozhikode district and almost 18kms from the Kozhikode Railway Station, Kadalundi was once the headquarters of the Chera dynasty. Fast forward to the present day, this land is now renowned for its rich bio diversity. It is home to over hundreds of native birds and the mangrove forests here are a natural habitat for otters and jackals.Â
Spread over 3kms of beautiful island clusters, the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is nestled on the picturesque coastline of Kerala where the Kadalundi River meets the Arabian Sea. During the Sangam period, in the reign of the Cheras, Kadalundi was a major port and an important point for international trade much like Muziris. Even much later, under the Parappanad Kingdom it was a major town.
The hillocks that surround this area give you a panoramic view of the entire region including the estuary, mangroves and the sea. Situated at 660ft above sea level the sanctuary boasts of nature and wilderness at its best. A treat to the eye and spirit, the lush greenery, soothing environs and the background music of birdcalls make it a rejuvenating retreat for city dwellers.
What truly sets this bird sanctuary apart is its role as a wintering ground for migratory birds. Every year thousands of birds flock to these tranquil shores to escape the harsh winter climate of Siberia, Central Asia and Europe.Â
Terns, gulls, herons, sandpipers, whimbrels, sand plovers, red and greenshanks, and other exotic birds commonly sighted here makes the sanctuary a kaleidoscope for avian life. A much sought after haunt for bird watchers and nature lovers alike, some of the major attractions of this bird sanctuary include kingfishers, Malabar Hornbills, woodpeckers, darters, plovers and Brahminy kites.
Birds aren’t the only wildlife here on these islands. These wetlands are home to a wide variety of fish, crabs, mussels and snakes like the Viper, Cobra and the Krait as well. Turtles are also a common sight here.Â
The alluring charm of the mangroves draws trekkers, wildlife photographers and picnickers to the sanctuary throughout the year. That said, the ideal time to visit for the best bird watching experience is from November to April as it is during this period that migratory birds arrive from different parts of the world for nesting and breeding before they head back home in April.Â
Every morning as the sun rises on the horizon the air is filled with the beautiful symphony of birdcalls and the synchronised rhythm of flocks taking flight. The stunning natural beauty of the area can be enjoyed further by going on boat rides or hikes within the reserve.Â
A vital habitat for a diverse array of avian species, the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is today a hotspot for avian enthusiasts as well as eco-tourism but beyond its ecological significance, this slice of paradise also offers visitors a respite from their hectic lives to pause, reconnect with nature and rejuvenate their spirits. Basking in the serenity of the natural environs here is more than enough to leave an indelible mark on the hearts of all those who venture to visit the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary.
