A Peaceful Countryside Escape on the Kerala-Tamil Nadu Border

Kambalathara sits quietly near Meenakshipuram on the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border, wrapped in the gentle charm of Palakkad’s countryside. Travellers reach it through the Palakkad–Chittoor–Pollachi route, and the landscape slowly opens into wide green stretches, grazing lands and palm-filled horizons. The Kambalathara Vengalakkayam Dam at Kozhinjampara is the centrepiece of this region. The reservoir can be reached after a pleasant drive of about 31 kilometres from Palakkad town, and it is here that the countryside begins to reveal its softer, slower rhythm.

Around the dam, the land takes on a pastoral beauty. Narrow paths wind through paddy fields that sway lightly in the wind. Cattle rest in open meadows. Palm trees stand tall against the sky, forming long rows that seem to watch over the fields. The setting has a quiet harmony that feels almost effortless, which is perhaps why filmmakers have returned here again and again. Many Malayalam and Tamil films have chosen this landscape for its sincerity and natural grace. Odiyan, starring Mohanlal and Manju Warrier, is one of the better-known films shot in these surroundings.

Kambalathara is part of a larger agricultural heartland. Palakkad has earned its name as the rice bowl of Kerala because of the vast paddy fields found in Nenmara, Kollengode, Chittoor and Kozhinjampara. In Chittoor, fields stretch so far that they meet the horizon in a quiet shimmer of green and gold.

A little higher up, Nelliampathy offers a change in terrain. The approach from Nenmara takes travellers past the historic Pothundi Dam before the road climbs sharply into the hills. Tea and cardamom plantations spread out on both sides, and viewpoints like Seetharkundu and Kesavanpara open into dramatic vistas. The government-run orange farm adds another gentle stop along the way. Palakkad is also rich in places that hold cultural memory. In Chittur, the Thunchath Madom honours Thunchaththu Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, the revered figure regarded as the father of Malayalam. The memorial preserves objects connected to his life and offers travellers a chance to reflect on Kerala’s literary roots.

Not far from here lies Thasrak, the village that shaped O. V. Vijayan’s The Legends of Khasak. Walking through Thasrak feels like stepping into the pages of the novel, with sculptures, old houses and a dedicated museum that recall the writer’s time here. For those interested in heritage architecture, Kollengode presents the graceful lines of its palace, now a private resort that can be visited with prior permission. The agraharams in Chittoor and Kollengode add another layer of interest with their traditional Brahmin street layouts and distinctive homes.

To experience Palakkad’s wilder side, travellers often continue to the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve. The forest department operates rest houses where visitors can stay overnight. It is a setting where elephants, wild gaur and a rich variety of wildlife move through the forests, offering a rare sense of closeness to nature. With its blend of gentle farmlands, literary heritage, hill views and wildlife experiences, Kambalathara is an introduction to the character of Palakkad itself, a district shaped by land, memory and the quiet continuity of rural life.
