Forest Trek and Triple-Echo Rock Formation near Konni

Kokkathodu is a quaint settlement located a few kilometres from Konni in Pathanamthitta district, known for its forest trekking route leading to the rock formation called Kattathipara. Situated approximately 11 kilometres from Pathanamthitta town, the area lies within Aruvappulam Panchayat and forms part of a landscape defined by dense forest cover, laterite outcrops and interior village terrain. Kattathipara stands out as the primary attraction, drawing visitors interested in trekking and geological formations.

The approach to Kattathipara involves walking through forested paths that pass beneath tall trees and thick undergrowth. The route is natural and not fully developed with structured infrastructure, making it suitable for visitors prepared for moderate trekking conditions. The trail gradually opens onto a massive rock formation composed of large exposed stone surfaces rising prominently above the forest floor. These gigantic rocks create a dramatic visual contrast against the surrounding greenery and form the defining feature of the site.

One of the distinctive characteristics of Kattathipara is the triple-echo phenomenon. When sound is projected toward specific rock faces, it reflects back multiple times, producing a layered echo effect that has become associated with the location. This acoustic feature, combined with the imposing rock structure, has contributed to local narratives linked to a hunter and his companion, which are often retold in the surrounding region. The rock formation’s size and shape enhance the acoustic reflection, making the echo experience particularly noticeable.

Kokkathodu and Kattathipara remain largely undeveloped as commercial tourist centres. There are no extensive facilities or built amenities within the forest stretch. Visitors are advised to prioritise safety, especially since the area is home to wildlife typical of forest regions in Pathanamthitta district. Carrying sufficient water, wearing appropriate footwear and visiting during daylight hours are recommended. The combination of forest trekking, massive rock formations and the triple-echo phenomenon defines Kokkathodu as an adventure-oriented destination near Konni.
