Forests, Rivers and Tribal Landscapes of the Western Ghats

Kuttampuzha lies along the eastern edge of Ernakulam district, stretching deep into the Western Ghats near the Kerala–Tamil Nadu border. Covering more than 650 square kilometres, it is one of the largest panchayats in Kerala in terms of area. Much of its terrain remains forested, with dense tree cover, streams and river systems shaping the landscape.

The region takes its name from the meeting of rivers. Local accounts trace “Koottanpuzha” to the joining of the Vadattupara, Pinavoorkudy and Pooyamkutty rivers. These waterways flow through thick vegetation and rocky riverbeds before merging into larger systems that eventually feed the Periyar basin. Several upper tributaries of the Periyar originate in these forested high ranges, giving the area hydrological importance within central Kerala.

Large stretches of evergreen and semi-evergreen forest still define Kuttampuzha. Wildlife movement corridors, riverine ecosystems and elevated hill slopes form an interconnected natural zone that has remained relatively undisturbed compared to more urbanised parts of the district. During the pandemic years, environmental observations highlighted the clarity and ecological health of the region’s water bodies, drawing attention to its largely intact ecosystems.

Kuttampuzha also carries strong cultural identity. It has one of the highest tribal populations in Kerala after Wayanad. Communities such as the Muthuvan and Mannan continue to maintain traditional livelihoods linked to forest resources, agriculture and river systems. Their settlements are dispersed across interior forest areas, where customary practices and community structures remain significant.

In recent years, eco-tourism initiatives have begun to emerge in a limited and community-oriented manner. Trekking routes, river exploration, forest walks and visits to interior settlements attract travellers seeking quieter, nature-focused experiences. Access routes from Kothamangalam and nearby forest corridors connect Kuttampuzha to destinations such as Thattekkad and Pooyamkutty, positioning it as part of a broader high-range travel circuit.

Kuttampuzha stands today as a landscape where forest, river and community life intersect. Its character is shaped less by built infrastructure and more by terrain, water flow and long-standing cultural presence within the Western Ghats.
