A Misty Hamlet

Set within the high-range belt of Ernakulam district, Mamalakandam is a mountain village located about 32 kilometres from Kothamangalam at an elevation of roughly 500 metres above sea level. Forested slopes surround the settlement, and mist often settles across the hills during early mornings and monsoon months.

The village drew statewide attention when visuals of a government high school, positioned directly in front of the cascading Elamplassery Waterfall, began circulating online. The sight of a functioning classroom framed by falling water and distant hill slopes gave Mamalakandam an unexpected identity within Kerala’s hill landscape. The waterfall flows seasonally with varying intensity, and during peak flow, it forms a dramatic backdrop behind the school grounds.

The journey to Mamalakandam is part of the experience. The drive from Kothamangalam through the forested stretch toward Thattekkad passes narrow hill roads, shaded canopies and small clearings that open toward streams. Side trails lead to quiet rivulets and interior forest paths. Butterflies, birdlife and thick vegetation line these routes, giving the entire region a deep green character.

Wildlife presence remains active in the surrounding forest. Elephant movement is reported in interior stretches, and sightings of gaur (Indian bison) and other forest animals are part of the larger Western Ghats ecosystem. Elevated tracks around the village lead to hilltop viewpoints where layered valleys and rolling ridgelines become visible. These off-road climbs attract travellers looking for open high-range views without heavy crowds.

The Inchathotty Suspension Bridge across the Periyar River lies within driving distance, often included in the same travel circuit. Local food experiences, including preparations made from bamboo rice such as mulayari payasam, reflect the rural setting and forest-linked produce of the area.

Mamalakandam remains a quiet high-range settlement shaped by waterfall, forest and hillside terrain. Its appeal lies in landscape continuity rather than commercial development, offering a mountain environment where mist, streams and footpaths define the experience.
