Mar Thoma Cheriapally, or the St. Thomas Church in Kothamangalam, Ernakulam district carries profound historical and cultural importance. Saint Baselios Yeldho is buried in this prominent parish in India. Serving as a beacon of communal unity, this church welcomes pilgrims from diverse castes and creeds on a daily basis, each seeking the Saint’s intercession. Moreover, on all Saturdays, Holy Qurbono on three altars is offered in the church with special prayers seeking the Saint’s intercession.

The church is particularly vibrant during the Cheriapally Festival or Kanni 20 Perunnal, occurring on October 2nd and 3rd, making it an excellent time to visit the church. On these days, Dhukrono of the Saint is celebrated in the church embracing spiritual grandeur in the festivities. In remembrance of the instance of guiding Mor Yeldho Bava to this church by a Nair (Hindu) Youth, his successors are still given the privilege to hold the traditional lamp of the church and lead the Rassa (Church procession) to the church on the festival day. Bava is the Patron Saint of Kothamangalam and Mar Thoma Cheriapally is the source of eternal light in this place. During the festival, devotees offer to their Church the fruits of their labour as well as a share of the money that they earn.

It's not only a religious affair but also a cultural gathering, transforming the festival into a social occasion for people to come together. It brings together friends and families from near and far, enabling them to cherish moments filled with happiness and affection.
