Mayyanad
Mayyanad is a village in south western Kollam, located on the banks of the Paravur Lake, which borders the Arabian Sea. Mayyanad attracts many visitors throughout the year who come to see Mayyanad’s natural beauty, which is mainly made up of its many beaches, which arise from both its lake and sea. It is also known for its various Ayurvedic centres, which adds to the rich cultural history of Mayyanad, tourists visiting not only for the scenery, but also solutions to medical problems.
Landmarks
Of the many temples, churches, mosques, the most famous religious monuments of Mayyanad are the Umayanalloor Sree Balasubramanya Swami Temple, the Subramanya Swami Temple, and the Church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception. The Umayanalloor Sree Balasubramanya Swami Temple’s shrine is said to have been made by one of the most prominent Hindu philosophers, Sree Sankaracharya. The Paravur lake is fed by the Ithikkara river, and is small but quite popular. Other underrated locations include the Thanni beach and the Kappil beach.Â
The Subramanya Swami Temple
The Subramanya Swami Temple is dedicated to Lord Murugan, like the Umayanalloor Sree Balasubramanya Swami Temple. The former is believed to have been built by the legendary sage Parashurama, and exhibits stunning traditional architecture. The temple attracts numerous devotees from all over the state, and especially during Thaipooyam, its annual festival, in which traditional processions and performances are carried out.
Beaches of Mayyanad
The Kollam beach, with its amazing backwaters, is also very popular, visited by both locals and outsiders, known for being the first Beach Wedding Destination, and on its grounds is the beautiful Mahatma Gandhi Park. One can also visit Mayyanad beach, which has beautiful views of the sunset. Travellers can go boating on the backwaters of Paravur Lake, and bird-watchers would find a haven in it, as Mayyanad is home to many species of migratory birds.Â
Though Mayyanad is a small village, it is well connected by road and rail. Mayyanad's railway station is a stop on the Trivandrum-Kollam route, allowing for tourists to stop by easily on their way to other places, facilitating easy travel.
