Spice Plantation Hills and Viewpoint near Thekkady

Murikkady in Idukki district is a plantation-covered hill region where agriculture, forest terrain and high-range climate converge. Situated close to Thekkady, this area is known for its large-scale cultivation of pepper, cardamom, tea and coffee. The terrain unfolds across gently rising hills and valley folds, offering long visual stretches across the Western Ghats landscape.

The approach roads move through narrow green corridors where tall spice plants and plantation fencing frame the path. As the elevation rises, the view opens dramatically. Drone perspectives reveal a mosaic of cultivated slopes bordered by forest patches, while hilltop trails cut through tall grass and scattered shrubs. The Murikkady viewpoint overlooks layered mountain ranges fading into mist, with plantation grids visible along the slopes below. The shifting light across the hills, especially during early morning and late evening, creates strong contrasts between open grassland ridges and dense evergreen forest.

Murikkady’s plantation system remains one of its defining features. Pepper vines climb support trees, cardamom grows under shaded canopies, and coffee shrubs spread across terraced fields. Clove, ginger and turmeric are also cultivated in surrounding estates. The cool high-range climate, with temperatures typically ranging between 15°C and 30°C during peak season, makes the region suitable for spice farming and outdoor exploration alike.

The network of beaten paths and estate roads allows for walking, light trekking and photography. The area’s terrain transitions between forest margins, plantation slopes and open hilltops, providing varied vantage points. Murikkady is frequently combined with visits to nearby destinations such as Thekkady, Kumily and the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, placing it within a larger high-range tourism circuit of Idukki district.

Murikkady remains defined by its plantation economy, elevated viewpoints and quiet hill environment. The charming blend of spice cultivation, panoramic landscapes and accessible trails positions it as a high-range destination within Kerala’s Western Ghats region.
