Azhithala Estuary by the Tejaswini River

Just beyond the regular coastal circuit of northern Kerala lies Thaikadappuram Beach, a wide and open shoreline in Kasaragod district that feels close enough for a spontaneous drive. Located about 43 kilometres from Kasaragod town, 18 kilometres from Kanhangad, and 13 kilometres from Nileshwaram, it works well as an unplanned afternoon outing rather than a fixed itinerary stop.

What sets this stretch apart is its geography. On one side flows the Tejaswini River, and on the other stands a long seawall facing the Arabian Sea. The meeting point of river and sea forms the estuary locally known as Azhithala. Casuarina trees line parts of the shore, creating patches of shade that make even the midday hours manageable. Evenings are quieter and more expansive, with the river surface turning still before sunset.

A motorable road reaches the estuary directly, and toilet facilities are available. Other amenities are gradually taking shape. Parking is usually found along the roadside near the coastal police station. The District Tourism Promotion Council is working on a master plan to structure tourism at Azhithala, though at present there is no entry fee and no formal restaurant infrastructure. A few small local shops sell tea, soft drinks, and basic snacks.

Access is straightforward. From Kasaragod, one can travel via Kanhangad along the State Highway, Chandragiri Road, or through Bekal. From the Kanhangad Old Bus Stand, buses run along the coastal route to Azhithala in roughly thirty minutes, though services are limited. A more consistent option is to board a bus towards Nileshwaram, get down at the Padannakad Agricultural College stop on the National Highway, and continue by auto-rickshaw. Those driving generally prefer the Padannakad Agricultural College–Thaikadappuram road, which leads directly to the shoreline.

Thaikadappuram does is not a beachside destination teeming with visitors but it remains a spacious and secluded riverside coast where river breeze, open sand, and unstructured time shape the experience.
