Unwind on the Golden Sands of Malappuram

Tirur is a charming coastal town in Malappuram district that holds a special place in Kerala’s cultural landscape. From historic temples and open beaches to the well-known Thunchan Parambu, Tirur offers a range of experiences that reflect the character of this region.

Just two kilometres from Tirur town stands its most celebrated heritage centre, Thunchan Parambu. Revered as the literary capital of Malayalam, this sacred ground preserves the memory of Thunchath Ramanujan Ezhuthachan, the 16th-century poet whose efforts in shaping and popularising the Malayalam script earned him the title “Father of the Malayalam language.” Visitors can explore the Akshara Mandapam, where Ezhuthachan’s original writing stylus is displayed, see the famous ‘Kaikaatha Kanjiram’ tree known for its unusual non-bitter fruits, and walk through the Malayalam Language Museum. For lovers of language and history, it is an experience that connects past and present.

Travelling about 5.5 kilometres along the scenic Koottayi coastal highway brings you to Unniyal Beach, one of Tirur’s most beautiful coastal stretches. Those coming from Kozhikode can also reach it directly through Tanur, about 7.4 kilometres away. Clean, open and easy to access, Unniyal Beach stretches for over a kilometre alongside a drivable road. On bright days, the sand appears soft and expansive, while the sea reflects shifting shades of blue. Coconut trees lean gently towards the shore, and the seawall along the edge creates a pleasant space for evening walks. As the sun lowers towards the horizon, the beach takes on a warm glow, making it a favourite spot for photography.

Like many beaches along the Malabar Coast, Unniyal once played a role in maritime trade during the spice trade period. Ships and traders from distant regions are believed to have used these coastal routes. Not far from here are Padinjarekkara Beach and the Koottayi Estuary. From the breakwater, distant views towards Ponnani can be seen where river and sea meet.

No visit to Tirur is complete without exploring Thirunavaya, one of Kerala’s most important heritage locations. Once the venue of the grand Mamankam festival held every twelve years, Thirunavaya continues to carry deep cultural and religious significance. The serene Nava Mukunda Temple stands along the banks of the Bharathapuzha, while temples dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Brahma lie across the river, forming a rare spiritual setting. The riverbank known as the ‘balikadavu’ is an important site for performing ancestral rites, drawing devotees throughout the year. Thirunavaya also hosts the Sarvodaya Mela annually, inspired by Gandhian principles and community participation.

Accommodation is readily available in and around Thirunavaya, with lodges and hotels offering comfortable stays. The town has its own railway station located just behind the bus stand, with major trains halting here, along with frequent bus services ensuring smooth connectivity. From the literary legacy of Thunchan Parambu to the wide sandy stretches of Unniyal and Padinjarekkara, and from sacred riverbanks to coastal trade history, Tirur presents a journey that is both enriching and refreshing.
