Ayyappan Kovil Hanging Bridge in Idukki district extends nearly 200 metres across the Periyar River, connecting Ayyappan Kovil Grama Panchayath and Kanchiyar Grama Panchayath near Mattukatta. Located beside the historic Sastha (Ayyappa) Temple, the bridge stands within a river valley framed by forested slopes and rugged high-range terrain. Recognised as one of the longest hanging bridges in Kerala, it has become a defining landmark of this part of the district.
The suspension structure rises lightly above the flowing river, offering an elevated crossing with open views in every direction. The Periyar moves steadily beneath, while surrounding hills form a layered backdrop that changes with season and light. During monsoon months, water levels increase due to the Idukki Dam reservoir, altering the visual character of the valley. With its minimal design and uninterrupted sightlines, the bridge itself becomes the central experience rather than simply a point of transit. Open 24 hours and free to enter, Ayyappan Kovil Hanging Bridge remains a scenic and accessible stop within Idukki’s hill landscape.
