A Spiritual and Cultural Landmark in Kerala

Nestled near Kerala's bustling capital, Thiruvananthapuram, Beemapally Dargah Shareef is a revered site, cherished for its spiritual significance and vibrant history. Dedicated to Syedunnisa Beema Beevi, a Muslim woman believed to have divine healing powers, and her son Syedushuhadamaheen Abubacker, the dargah is a symbol of compassion and communal harmony. With its striking pink exterior, the mosque is a captivating sight, especially in the golden hues of the morning sun.

Beema Beevi and her son are said to have arrived in Kerala from Arabia, spreading the teachings of Islam while using their knowledge of traditional medicine to help the sick. Many embraced Islam through their guidance, leading to a thriving community near their residence. However, their growing popularity drew envy, resulting in a tragic conflict with local authorities over unfair taxes. Maheen Abubacker was killed during an altercation, and Beema Beevi, heartbroken by the loss, passed away shortly after. Their burial site became a place of pilgrimage, revered for its spiritual energy and miraculous events.

A unique feature of the dargah is its two ancient wells, one with hot water and the other with cold, believed to date back to Beevi's time. These wells never dry up, even during the harshest summers, and are said to have healing properties, adding to the site's mystique.

The current mosque structure, completed in 1984, was designed by Govindan Gopalakrishnan, a Hindu architect renowned for his work on over 100 mosques. Blending Indo-Saracenic architectural elements, the mosque reflects Kerala's ethos of unity and inclusivity. Gopalakrishnan, a strong advocate for communal harmony, worked tirelessly to create a space that embodies the shared spirit of the community.

The annual Uroos festival, celebrated over 11 days, commemorates the life and legacy of Beema Beevi. Starting with the ceremonial hoisting of the festival flag in the Islamic month of Jama dul Akbar, the festival draws thousands of visitors from diverse backgrounds who come together to honour her memory, enjoy vibrant cultural events, and participate in the spiritual activities.
