Inchathotty Suspension Bridge lies within the forested stretch of Ernakulam district, extending across the Periyar River for about 185 metres. It is widely known as Kerala’s longest pedestrian hanging bridge. The structure links the panchayats of Keerampara and Kuttampuzha and remains an important local crossing while also drawing visitors for its setting.
The narrow walkway runs high above the river, framed on both sides by dense greenery. A steady breeze moves across the span, and the bridge responds with a mild, natural sway as people walk across. The motion is part of the design and adds a sense of height and openness to the crossing. The surrounding landscape forms part of the larger forest belt near the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary, a region known for its rich plant and bird life.
From the centre of the bridge, the Periyar spreads wide below. Country boats move along the water at a relaxed pace, and occasional kayakers follow the curves of the riverbanks. The view layers together flowing water, thick tree cover and distant hills rising beyond the canopy. Light changes through the day alter the tone of the river surface and the forest, making each crossing slightly different.
Travellers exploring Bhoothathankettu, Neriamangalam and nearby forest routes often include Inchathotty as a halt. Visitors slow their pace midway to look down at the river, observe activity along the banks and take photographs from above. The bridge remains simple in structure yet striking in location, uniting the river, forest and village landscapes in one continuous vista.
