Kottappuram, located a short distance from Nileshwaram and about twelve kilometres from Kanhangad, serves as the primary access point to the Valiyaparamba backwaters in northern Kerala. Often referred to as the Venice of the North in the Malabar region, this is where organised houseboat tourism began in 2001 with the launch of the first vessels by the Bekal Resorts Development Corporation. Since then, the area has developed into a structured cruising centre under the State Tourism Department’s Malabar River Cruise project.
The Valiyaparamba, also known as the Kavvayi backwaters, stretches parallel to the Arabian Sea across parts of Kasaragod and Kannur districts. The inland water system alternates between wide open sections and narrower passages bordered by coconut groves and small settlements. Bridges connect mainland roads to backwater villages, reinforcing the functional relationship between land transport and water-based travel.
Cruises from Kottappuram extend for nearly 30 kilometres through this navigable network. The calm nature of the water and the steady pace of movement make the experience comfortable for mixed age groups. Boats are designed with spacious seating, open deck areas, and sheltered interiors, allowing ease of movement and flexibility for longer journeys. Larger vessels can accommodate group gatherings, while bedroom boats are available for overnight stays. Standard daytime cruises operate between 10 AM and 4 PM with freshly prepared meals served onboard, and shorter two-hour options are available from the terminal.
Compared to the more commercialised backwater circuits of southern Kerala, Kottappuram remains relatively less crowded. The setting is defined by shoreline greenery, modest village infrastructure, and open water rather than heavy tourism construction. With a dedicated terminal that provides basic amenities including parking and food facilities, Kottappuram offers an unique backwater experience suited for families seeking a full-day outing or a shorter cruise along the Valiyaparamba.
